Obituary of Verner "Vern" Dorward

Verner "Vern" L. Dorward passed away on July 30, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 1, 1933 in Cuyler, NY a son of the late Pearl and Hattie Knapp Dorward Stone. Vern is survived by his son, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Dorward, Cortland, two daughters, Terri (Thomas) Owen, Solon, Aimee Dorward, McGraw, two brothers, John, DeRuyter, David, Mt. Airy, Maryland, a sister-in-law, Darla Snyder, DeRuyter, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Vern is predeceased by the love of his life, Roberta Angell Dorward, five sisters, Clara "Marie" Waringer, Marjorie Eaton, Wilma Moore, Eva Baker, Mable Haskins, five brothers, Clair Sr., Robert, William, Walter, and Raymond. Vern served his country with the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He opened and operated Vern's Service Center and several other service stations for 32 years. After his retirement from the Service Station Vern started a lawn care service that he operated for 18 years. Vern truly enjoyed watching Aimee play recreational softball. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, and avid NASCAR fan especially Jeff Gordon. He was a previous member of the Cortland Lions Club. Vern truly enjoyed time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Hillcrest Cemetery, DeRuyter, NY. Wright-Beard Funeral Home, Inc. is assisting the family with arrangements.
