Dorris (Dorr) D. Sponaugle, 100, of Cortland passed away November 18, 2017 at the Elizabeth Brewster House in Homer where he resided for the past several months. He was born June 3, 1917 in Pittsburgh PA, the son of the late Don and Eva Bland Sponaugle. This past June he was feted with a 100th birthday celebration attended by 75 family and friends.

 

Dorr came with his family to the area at a young age graduating from Dryden High School in 1936. He then served four and a half years during WWII as a Sargent in the U.S. Army 5th General Hospital Unit stationed in Northern Ireland, England, and France receiving three Battle Stars. After being honorably discharged he and his late wife, Betty, moved to Cortland in 1945. Dorr retired from the Cortland Fire Dept. after thirty one years of service in 1979 as Lieutenant. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church serving as a Deacon and Elder, American Legion Post 489, Water Witch Co. #1 C.F.D., DAV, and United Police and Fire Retiree’s Assoc. of NY. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling, but most of all being with family.

 

He is survived by his sons Don L. Sponaugle of Stuart Fl., James D. (Deborah) Sponaugle of Cortland, Dale W. (Lou Ann) Sponaugle of Amherst NY, his daughter Gae Lynn Davis of Albuquerque New Mexico, seven grandchildren Amanda Bishop (Glenn Ferguson) of Cortland, NY, Kory J. (Ashley) Sponaugle of Camillus, NY and Jamison M. (Keri) Sponaugle of Homer, NY, Anna (Eric) Palumbo of NY, NY, Nicholas (Katherine) Sponaugle of Silver Springs, MD, Leah and Zachary Sponaugle of Amherst NY, Three Great Grandchildren Aiden & Emma Sponaugle, Elias Sponaugle, several nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Betty Sponaugle, his sisters Rena S. Moore, Wilda Saulsbury, and his brother Denby Sponaugle.

 

Private services and burial are with the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045. Burial will be at the Cortland Rural Cemetery.
