Allen Al King, 85, Cortland area resident, passed away Friday November 13, 2009 at the Cortland Care Center. He was born June 21, 1925 in Cortland, the son of the late Burgess & Maude King. Al was a lifelong resident of Cortland, graduating from Cortland High School. He then went onto serve his country with the U.S. Air Force during WWII, and was honorably discharged. After returning from his military service he married Barbara Edlund in 1947. Al owned and operated BB King and Sons from 1945 until the early 1970s with his father and brother. He then took employment with for the Cortland City Schools as Transportation Supervisor, and finished his working career as Service Manager for Cortland Ford. His memberships included the Cortland Elks for 62 yrs serving as Exalted Ruler in 1958, and the Ys Mens Club. Al and his late wife Barb enjoyed many wonderful years together skiing, boating with family and friends on the St. Lawrence, listening to Big Band music, and a lifetime love of cars. He is survived by his daughter Gretchen (John) Piazza of McGraw NY, son Bruce King of Vail Colorado, grandfather of Jennifer (Mark Bohr) Piazza, Peter Nicholas (Kimberly) Piazza, Jason Piazza, Morgan King, Ian King, brother Richard King, brother and sister in law Carl and Jane Edlund, many nieces and nephews. Al was predeceased by his wife Barbara Edlund King, son Peter King, sister in law Mary King, brother and sister in law Julius and Carloyn (Edlund) Tainter. Calling hours will be held Tuesday 4-7 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY. A funeral service will be held Wednesday 10 am at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, with burial to follow at the Cortland Rural Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Cortland Free Library.
