Catherine Jean Kay Conrad Root, 84, of 17 Lincoln Ave, Cortland, passed away May 2, 2010 at the Cortland Care Center. Mrs. Root was born June 16, 1925 in South Bend, Indiana the daughter of the late S. William and Anita Durst Conrad. Catherine moved to the Cortland area in 1928 to live with her aunt Versie Peet. Catherine retired from Smith Corona in 1990 after 30 years of service. She had been a member of the VFW Auxiliary for many years and was a past President of the Auxiliary. Kay had been a member of the Homer Avenue United Methodist Church, RSVP, and DAV. She had been a volunteer with Cortland County Emergency Management and CAPCO. She enjoyed traveling, her rose garden, the cottage in Canada and spending time with her family and friends, she will be dearly missed. Mrs. Root is survived by her daughters; Cynthia (William) Peake of Cortland and Charlene Roxanne (Patt) Cheney of Rochester, NY., her grandchildren; Brenda Lillie and William Peake , her great grandchildren Kimberly and Kristie Adams. Catherine was predeceased by her first husband William Cheney and second husband Robert C. Root and her sister and brother-in-law Betty and Hans Rudin A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 PM at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland with the Rev. Stephen Sigourney officiating. A calling hour will be held 12:00-1:00 prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery, Preble.
