Obituary of Kenneth E Hubbard

Kenneth E. Hubbard 89 of Cortland passed away October 9, 2010 at Cortland Regional Medical Center. Ken was born December 3, 1920 in Cortland the son of the late Floyd and Lena Rogers Hubbard. He served his country with the United States Marines during WWII .serving in the South Pacific and the Asiatic Theater Ken graduated from McGraw High School and Cortland State. He taught in South Otselic for two years, before transferring to McGraw schools teaching 6th grade for 28 years. He was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association. Ken is survived by his wife Elizabeth Caufield Hubbard of Cortland, his daughter Donna (Michael) Coleman of Lilburn, Georgia, his grandchildren Teresa E. Coleman of Lilburn, Georgia, and Andrew R. Coleman of Holbrook, New York, Several nieces and nephews In addition to his parents Ken was predeceased by his brothers Gerald, Floyd Jr. and Richard. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 pm Tuesday at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home 9 Lincoln Ave. Cortland with the Reverend Fran Cochran officiating. Interment will follow in Cortland Rural Cemetery. He had a presence about him that commanded respect...I think of him sort of like a Gary Cooper kind of guy...quietly reserved, yet comfortingly firm. A first-rate teacher and just a wonderful person. I wish I had spent time with him as an adult. I went on to college at the University of Michigan and became an architect. My love, admiration, and respect reach out to Ken and his surviving family. I remembered him always as being such a gentle caring man. I remember being so disappointed that I didn't get to have him as my 6th grade teacher. It was a pleasure to have you as next door neighbors for all those years growing up. Your husband/father was one of those rare people who others looked up to because of his character, dignity and respect of others. Donna, I hope your children know what a fine man their grandfather was! I feel honored to have known him. You are in my thoughts and prayers and I am sure you my mom is praying for you as well. Kathy McGrady Schaefer Elizabeth,Donna and family: I am deeply sorry to hear of Mr. Hubbard's passing. I'll always refer to him as Mr. Hubbard as I had him for sixth grade in the 1963-64 school yr. What a wonderful man and teacher he truly was. I'll always remember fondly the things he taught me and all of us that were lucky enough to have him for our teacher. He not only was a wonderful teacher,but he was also an exemplary role model. I'll never forget what he taught me about both academics and life. He was known among all of the boys in school as well as the rest of the faculty as "Mr. Smooth", as he was so well physically coordinated. I clearly remember Mr. Dumas remarking to the boys basketball players that Mr. Hubbard's bowling ball just glided down the alley and how awed everyone was to watch him. Mrs. Hubbard perhaps you'll remember me as myself and Neil Bennett had a old car that we drove around the vacant lot behind your house in 1965 when Neil's parents(Doc and Margaret)lived behind you on South Hill. You always wanted time to get your laundry in before we raise a dust cloud! Donna, I still remember you with your red hair and freckles even though you were much my junior. If I had to name my favorite teacher at any level including college,it would definitely be Mr. Hubbard. With deepest regrets, Steve Owens P.S. He was an exemplary gentleman, a great teacher, and a suburb role model for us when we worked with him at McGraw from 1961 to 1970. (Pauline was an art teacher, from 1961 until 1963; and I was a science teacher and coach from 1962 until 1970). I remember him as an excellent teacher and role model for our age group; always prepared and in control of the classroom with the quiet respect he commanded. He was a wonderful teacher, and a dear friend,and we shared many happy times in school. How wonderful that God has given him so many years. May your memories sustain you.
