Aunt Phyllis will always be remembered for her kindness, her ability to talk to anyone (young or old) and make them feel welcomed and special...She was adventurous, daring, independent and lots of fun. Most of our time together was spent up at Lake Lauzon, where she was always willing to take the little ones fishing, go on hikes, pick blueberries, go swimming, go for a boat ride, kayak ride, play game after game of cards, work a jigsaw puzzle, catch frogs or tadpoles, or enjoy sitting with on the beach or screened in porch. Her cabin was a safe haven, all the children knew they were accepted there and regularly beat a path to her door!
When we lived out east and the boys were younger, Joe would drop us off in Cortland where we would catch a ride with her to spend several weeks with her at the lake. We had many eventful trips, often driving through the night. Once we got lost, searching for an open gas station very late at night in a not so safe area before we crossed into Canada. I was frightened, but she finally got us to a quick mart of some kind and left me and the boys in the car. She came out of the store with a man and he was gesturing and walking her down to the street...I was afraid for her, but it turned out to be one of her former students who was just giving her directions to the bridge. She told me I needed to learn to trust people more...she was fearless and didn't know a stranger. One night on our way to Canada, it was garbage day in a town we were passing through, and people had put out furniture and other items they didn't want at the curb...she drove us around "picking" for a few things we might use at the cabin! Every trip north was an adventure for sure! We stayed with Phyllis many summers and the will always remember them fondly.
Our boys loved her very much (as did all her nephews and nieces)...she taught them to ice skate when they were little and visiting her, she cooked the clams they dove for from the raft (an interesting meal for sure), she pulled them on tubes around the bay, and packed picnic lunches, helped them catch minnows, build fires, etc... She just made life enjoyable for all of us, memories we will always hold onto.
God bless her and all those who loved her...
She has gone from love to greater love...
Her niece and Goddaughter,
Karen

I was so very fortunate to have had classes with Mrs. McGinley at Cortland. What a wonderful, humanistic, caring professional she was! A great teacher, and a wonderful role model. Her spirit and kindness lives on in all of the hundreds of young professionals she taught and encouraged. Condolences to her family and friends.

My favorite teacher I ever had at any level.Always so positive,I became a physical education instructor in the new York city police academy and would try to get the recruits to feel that they could accomplish any task in front of them, just like she made me feel. When playing basketball at cortland always made me feel well after a loss.Just glad to have her show me how students should be treated. So glad to have had Mrs.McGinley in my life she will be missed.

mrs. McKinley was my favorite professor at Cortland College from 1982-1986. Her inspiration and dedication to education and young children Inspired me to be dedicated and passionate teacher that I was for 32 years. The only college text book that I saved (and still have) is the textbook from her class. I am happy to hear that she lived a long life full of family and life.

Rather than feel sorrow, I express the JOY in knowing Phyllis McGinley. She was the most influential teacher I've ever had, and to this day, I share here wisdom with my students and future professionals. So many of us were fortunate to have had her presence in our lives. Heaven has gained a great lady.

My name is Jim Woska and I was so fortunate to have known your mother while a student at SUNY Cortland from 1986-1990. One of the greatest compliments you can give someone is to say that they inspired you and set you on a path. Phyllis did that for me and more. Her positive energy, smile and caring demeanor is something I have never forgotten since leaving Cortland, and it is something I try to bring to my classes each and every day. Phyllis was a remarkable woman and my thoughts and prayers go out to your entire extended family. God Bless!

My first thought was “oh no, what a huge loss.” But then I thought of how fortunate I was to have her as a teacher. Her influence showed in my teaching over my 37 year career and in my time teaching at SUNY Cortland! I can still remember in the early 80’s not being able to find a copy of “Sweet Georgia Brown” for the basketball skills I was teaching at the time. I had asked her if she had a cassette that I could borrow. I was taking a grad class in Moffit at the time. She just walked into the class, asked the professor to stop and handed me the cassette! Then presenting at Cortland for me getting the award named after her and seeing her again that night was very special to me. Her smile was the same as it was when I had her in class.
