Mom Mom was one of a kind.
My parents, sister, and I shared a home with my grandparents growing up and so Mom Mom was very close to me, and she will always hold a core piece of my heart.
She would travel to see her children and grandchildren often and, after one of her summer trips to New Jersey, Mom Mom came home with a present (she often did). It was a video game - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. And while many grandparents would hand the game over to their grandchildren, Mom Mom was different - she sat down with me and, over the course of a few months, we learned how to beat the game together. We did so with countless games over her life, and when i went to college I would tell her about the games i was playing and she would play them on her own, just so that we could share those moments. (As an aside, in Link to the Past, you were given the option of naming the main character. His official name was Link, but we named him after her. “Jane.” The file select screen of my cartridge still reads her name to this day.) Playing games with her are some of my very first and favorite childhood memories.
She used to sing myself and my sister awake every morning to a version of “Good Morning” from Singing in the Rain. It would drive me crazy that someone could be that cheerful at 6:15 am every morning and i would grouchily climb downstairs to eat a breakfast while watching cartoons. Funny enough, I sing that same version of “Good Morning” to my daughter now. I’m not as good of a singer as her but I try to be just as enthusiastic.
I loved watching and talking about the Yankees with her. She may not have known all the stats, but she had a feel for the game and could tell when a player was going to hit a home-run or when they were going to strike out. I can still hear her bronchial laugh when Pop Pop would make up nicknames for the players - she loved that he called Andy Pettitte “the horse.” I was in college when the Yankee’s won the World Series in 2009 - I remember the late night phone calls and text messages I would get from her after those games. I’ll always think of her when I see pinstripes.
When I got married in 2018, she was so excited to be a part of the ceremony. She had two knee surgeries, a bad back, and had to use a cane to walk most of the time - but on that cold November day, she walked down the isle with my cousins on either side of her with the biggest smile on her face. She left lipstick on our cheeks when she kissed my wife and I at the end of the isle. I was so happy she was able to meet my new family, my friends in Rochester, and was part of the celebration. She set up camp on a small white couch at the reception and would pull people down to talk with them.
In the middle of the pandemic, my wife (Rachel) and I got pregnant. We had a long list of names that we were going to decide from and took it to the delivery room. After she gave birth, Rachel and I chose the name Mabel but it was my wife’s suggestion that we give her the middle name Jane. I remember calling up my mother and Mom Mom to tell them our new baby’s name, and listening to Mom Mom sob for a good while. I still have her voicemail from a few days after Mabel was born - all she wanted to talk about was Mabel from that point on.
Earlier this summer, I surprised her with flowers before a lunch meeting. She was sitting in her chair reading from her kindle and cried of joy when i walked through the door. We talked for hours about almost everything - I showed her how to play Wordle, we reminisced, and she asked to watch videos of Mabel playing. I felt like a kid again, sitting with her as she made me laugh. Before she passed this week, she told me how much that moment meant to her and how much fun she had with me over the years. I couldn’t agree more.
I love you, Mom Mom. Thank you for being the best grandmother a person could ask for.

Jane was my office manager when we both worked for Dr. Harry Grossman. We soon became friends that felt like family. We shared many laughs and played pranks on the staff. We went to Keswick a Christian retreat together and bible study too.
When I moved to Atlanta, GA and my career transitioned from dental assistant to dental technician to finally office manager - Jane became my moral compass. I would always think - how would Jane handle this problem or that difficult patient.
The photo of the heart is a Christmas ornament Jane made for me. I’ve hung it on my tree for close to 40 years. I sent Jane that photo to let her know I would never forget my days spent with her - Paul and the girls. I’ve had many meals at their house in Kendall Park. Paul would try to entice me to come over with Jane after work by saying - “I’ve got Little Debbie’s” … the snack cakes. So many precious memories are flooding my mind. I am all the better for knowing and loving Jane.
Heaven has gained an Angel.
