Obituary of Irene L. Rutan

Irene L. Rutan, 96, of Cortland, NY, passed away on Sunday September 11, 2022. She was born on May 5, 1926, the daughter of the late Reed and Maude Ellis Johnson. Irene was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She loved playing bingo, going bowling, going to the casino, and playing cards with her four special friends. Irene was a lifetime member of the American Legion, the Loyal Order of Moose, and a dedicated member of the Cortland Senior Club. She loved to travel. Throughout her life, she visited all 50 states, and especially loved visiting Hawaii and Europe. Irene also loved going on cruises and camping. She leaves behind fond memories of times spent at her vacation home at Kring's Point, on the St. Lawrence River. Irene was very proud of her work. She ran several H&R Block offices in Cortland, Groton, Moravia, and Whitney Point. She lived in Winter Garden, FL for 22 years, where she also ran three other H&R Block offices. She also owned a dairy bar in Moravia. Irene is survived by her children Kathy (William) Irving and Susan (Dean) Teeter, her step children Sherry (Ronald) Smith, Larry (Darla) Rutan, Raymond (Terri) Rutan, her sister Juanita Knapp, her niece Linda Cooper, her four grandchildren Travis Teeter, Dena (Matthew) Yager, Jeffrey (Jamie) Irving, Michael (Julianne) Irving, her eight great grandchildren Aiden and Dylan Teeter, Chase and Parker Irving, Robert and Nichole Irving, Edan and Brian Yager, and her special friends Marge Peck and Iva Little. Irene is predeceased by her husband Ronald Rutan in 1996, her brother Marvin Johnson, her nephew Donald Knapp, and her great niece Kelly Hamilton. Calling hours will be held on Monday September 19, 2022 from 11am-12pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland, NY. A funeral service will follow at 12pm with Deacon Steve officiating. Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery.
