Obituary of Irving Delos Goodrich Jr.

Irving Delos Goodrich Jr., of Cortland N.Y., passed away peacefully on June 23rd, 2023 at the age of 95. Irv was born on May 28, 1928 to Irving D. Goodrich Sr. And Marie Dolk Goodrich in Rochester, NY. He graduated from Watkins Glen High School in 1946 and from Geneseo State Teacher’s College (now SUNY Geneseo) in 1950. While in college, he married Jane Hicks. Shortly after his graduation, Irv and Jane relocated to Cortland, where he began a 32-year career at Cortland High School as a math teacher, retiring in 1983. During that time, he and Jane raised three children, and they temporarily relocated to Salt Lake City, where he received his Master’s Degree from the University of Utah in 1965. In 1986, Irv married Mary DiPietro, and they enjoyed many happy years traveling and enjoying friends until her passing in 2013. Irv was an avid Penn State football fan and attended many games with friends and family. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, and making pies en masse for any occasion. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, warmth, generosity and quick wit, which stayed with him through the end of his life. Irv is pre-deceased by his son, Steven Mark Goodrich (Susan Bonsteel) of Salt Lake City, and survived by his son Scott (Rosie Taravella) Goodrich of Port Murray, New Jersey, his daughter Susan (Jeff) Perleoni of El Cajon, California, grandchildren Ben Goodrich, Abby Goodrich, Jaden and Gianna Perleoni, his stepdaughters Nancy (Willard) Northrop, Donna (Robert Pufky), Nina (Michael MacLean), their children, Joselyn and Hilary Northrop and Michael MacLean, along with great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be on July 20th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Wright-Beard Funeral Home in Cortland. A memorial service will follow at Wright-Beard on July 21st at 11 a.m. Irv will be laid to rest at Tioga Cemetery in Owego at a later date. Donations may be made in Irv’s name to the Elizabeth Brewster House in Homer, the Food Bank of Central NY, or a charity of choice.
