Please share a memory of Kay to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Kay G. Newman, 92, formerly of Groton and currently of Cortlandville passed away April 15, 2024. She was born September 21, 1931 in Long Island, NY, the daughter of the late Joesph and Catherine Gentile. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Richard Newman and brother Joseph. Kay received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Hofstra University. She earned her master's in education from Cornell University, after which she worked as an elementary school teacher in the Groton School District for several years. While still working with young minds, she decided to pursue her love of reading. At this point, Kay attended Syracuse University for a master's degree in Library Science. All the while she was working full- time, raising three young sons and a husband. Upon successful completion of her degree, Kay became the head librarian for the Groton Jr./Sr. High School until her retirement. Kay was a life-time member of the Columbian Club, an avid reader, a talented cook who excelled at preparing food featuring her Sicilian heritage, thus earning her the moniker of "Kay Pasta." Kay also enjoyed gardening and sewing, making sure there was a special homemade quilt for everyone in the family. Another love of Kay's was Christmas, where she passionately spoiled her family with gifts that were given with thought and love … her calling card. Relocating to Cortland after her retirement, Kay became an active member of St. Anthony's Church, where she formulated many wonderful friendships which she cherished until her passing. She especially enjoyed the St. Anthony's Festival preparing and serving food. She is survived by her sons Russell Newman (Shelly), Robert Newman (Linda), Joseph Newman (Birgit), grandchildren, and one great grandchild, nieces and nephew. Per Kay's request there are no services scheduled.
